Born and raised in Shetland, prodigiously talented pianist Amy Laurenson explores the music of her homeland alongside traditional and folk music from Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia. Growing up surrounded by classical music, learning bassoon and piano from an early age, it was moving to Glasgow in 2017 to undertake a classical piano degree at the Royal Conservatoire Scotland that inadvertently drew her more deeply into the traditional world. Inspired by the city’s thriving pub sessions, she decided to switch courses into folk, an intuitive step that unlocked a singular creativity. Named BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2023 at Celtic Connections, she has since toured throughout the UK – performing solo, in duo with Portuguese guitarist, Miguel Girão, or with her quartet – appearing at Shetland Folk Festival, Edinburgh TradFest, Cambridge Folk Festival and more.
