Ayom's unique cross-border mix of Brazilian, Mediterranean and Lusophonic influences grew out of a quest for personal freedom that saw charismatic singer and percussionist Jabu Morales emigrate from her home in Minas Gerais, Brazil to Barcelona in 2011. There a fortunate meeting with Italian accordionist Alberto Becucci and Greek-raised percussionist Timoteo Grignani led to the formation of Ayom with Angolan percussionist Walter Martins, Portuguese-Angolan guitarist Ricardo Quinteira and bass player Francesco Valente. Their debut album sashayed straight into various world music charts and playlists, while Songlines magazine named it a 2020 Best Album, and Ayom as Best Band at their annual awards. Ayom – categorise their sound as Black Atlantic Music. Whatever the label, they delight and inspire with an integrated collective creation that emphatically comes straight from the heart.
