Belle Chen combines crystalline classical piano performance with unpredictable, joyously rich found sound. In an era where audiences fiend for an injection of unpredictability, Belle provides a potent infusion direct from the streets. In Belle’s music, gurgling water, PA announcements, trains, bird calls, and the din of conversation merge with the precision of familiar classical and improvised piano lines.
The diversity of Belle’s music is explained at least in part by the surfeit of projects she has undertaken: a record label called Eito Music, a podcast called ‘The World in Sounds,’ a fragrance collaboration, London fashion week commissions, worldwide multimedia installations, and three proper albums.
Brian Eno called Belle’s artistic approach “original and provocative,” and others have referred to her as a “revelation.” Whatever superlatives one prefers, Belle’s musical path is hers alone. We’re lucky to ride alongside her.
