Upon discovering the power of groove, Cimafunk quit medical school and went to Havana. Cimafunk – the name reflecting his proud connection to his Cimmaron heritage – concocting his home-grown mix of Afro-Cuban funk and rapidly making a name as a live performer. His 2017 debut album, Terapia (Therapy), and imaginative videos escalated him to star status in Cuba. He made an explosive US debut in 2019 at SXSW, touched down in France and Spain and was set to tour globally in 2020 when something else happened. But he stayed busy and 2021 brought an EP, Cun Cun Pra, featuring guest appearances from Omar Portuendo, Cucho Valdes, Orchestra Aragon and other Cuban musical royalty, plus collaborations with New Orleans brass band The Soul Rebels and Cuban pop diva Diana Fuentes.
