Especially in difficult times music makers and presenters of all kinds might come to re-imagine their role in society, relationships with their communities and the content of their musical programming. The motivations range from economic to activistic and every shade in between. But questions arise - can artistic programmes retain their quality if influenced by social issues? Do presenters have a duty to make the content of their programmes relevant to the social composition of audiences and of the ensembles themselves or is their only duty to produce the best music possible? What benefits, or disadvantages, might come with explicitly socially relevant content? Does the idea of a “balance” between quality and social engagement have any validity? This session features speakers who start from very different positions. They will explain their opinions and give tips for optimal programming.
