Club Makumba is a spontaneous, experimental, tribalist exercise, opening a window to a journey through the spirit sounds of the Mediterranean, through an imagined Africa, to find the source of a music without prejudice and without borders. The outcome is a sometimes sultry, sometimes blistering urban soundtrack from the cities of restless nights, building blocks of sound pulsing with electricity. The group started when guitarist Tó Trips, of legendary instrumental genre-mashers, Dead Combo, met João Doce, the redoubtable drummer of famed soul-a-billy indie-gospel punk rockers Wraygunn. Two accomplished players from the Portuguese jazz scene complete the stellar line-up: bassist Gonçalo Leonardo and saxophonist Gonçalo Prazeres. Club Makumba traverse a fusion of rock cartographies: guitars from the south coasts, North African rhythms, swept along by aerial spirits wandering in the jazz dunes, whipping up electrical dust-storms.
