collectif9 were formed in 2011 by students of McGill University and Université de Montréal. On paper the group - comprised of four violins, two violas, two cellos and a double bass - appear to be a typical chamber ensemble. However, the reality is far more intriguing.
A show by collectif9 does not just feature classical music, but also the trappings of the best rock, rap or pop shows: pulsing, dramatic lighting and sturdy, growling amplification. Rest assured, no one will be dozing off at a collectif9 show.
Double bassist Thibault Bertin-Maghit handles the group's arrangements, a contribution that bears fruit on the 2016 album Volksmobiles. The album is a nod to old-school classical music cool, featuring the newly-commissioned title work by composer Geof Holbrook. The nine musicians marshal a frenetic energy that draws from Bartók folk tunes to the engineered precision of Brahms and beyond. It is a debut full of promise.
