Communities around the world are the fertile grounds for musical creations, nurturing musicians and scenes and encouraging the birth of new musical styles and sounds. The safety net of a musical community can be seen as an antithesis of the emphasis of individualism driven by capitalism. In this talk, filmmakers who are presenting their films at the Film Library this year will talk about documenting new and existing musical communities around the world: from a sound system crew in India pursuing their search for spirituality and sound (Sound System Sanskriti), to a dreamlike audiovisual journey - shot entirely on VHS - exploring the devotional music and dancing of a Sufi Islamic sub-sect called Baye Fall in Senegal (Baye Fall Namanala), and a musical look at spiritual and political empowerment in Trinidad & Tobago (Got To Be Free - A Village Drums Of Freedom Story).
