Co-ordinated by Lisa Cheney (Australia), director, Making Waves New Music
with Leah Blankendaal (Australia), broadcaster, 3MBS FM & Making Waves
Community radio is the traditional voice of the underdog. Unlike its commercial counterpart, it is a platform for niche conversation and new talent. In art music circles, community broadcasters give a voice to demographics underrepresented in mainstream programming.
This said, the way in which community 'radio' is created and accessed is changing. The rise of grassroots podcasts and self-published playlists has given voice to diverse conversations about compositional practice, fulfilling roles traditionally held by community radio makers.
This session will explore the shared responsibilities to new music held by old and new community and grassroots media. Using the Australian MBS model and website/podcast Making Waves as starting points, the presenters will examine best practice in new music broadcasting and explain why they chose to come together to support new music communities.
