Taking a worldwide view of artist-driven initiatives, this session will discuss the richness of the independent scene where performers and composers are developing innovative approaches to the how, where and why of traditional performance contexts.
New collective approaches to music-making, public financing and interaction, production, marketing and programming are becoming the small and mid-scale norm.
Through exploring this ecosystem within our industry, questions arise including: can collective thinking reclaim the space between maker, performer and public? Can a venue be de-programmed, leaving its season to the artists that use it? What are the challenges, including sustainability, that this community faces and what can large-scale music institutions learn from them? Can composers and musicians further empower each other, instead of 'going it alone'?
