Session 5

Chaired by William Norris (UK), managing director, Southbank Sinfonia

with Catherine Arlidge (UK), artistic director, NCO

Sophie Lewis (UK), managing director, National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain

Matthew Swann (UK), chief executive officer, City of London Sinfonia

If you could build an orchestra from scratch, without having to worry about money, what would it look like? In a provocative and interactive session, the conversation will challenge the idea of what an orchestra can and should be in the 21st century. Sophie Lewis and Catherine Arlidge from the National Children's Orchestra, William Norris from Southbank Sinfonia and Matthew Swann from the City of London Sinfonia lead proceedings with their own radical visions, before throwing the floor open to the audience, as an orchestra for a city is built collectively from scratch. How would you respond to changing markets, audiences, technology, and society, and what implications do the visions we come up with have for the current orchestral sector and modern conservatoire training? Join us for a lively and perhaps controversial 60 minutes.
