Watch out, here comes some Singele. Probably the most frenetic music on the planet, hard-ass Afroelectropunk busting out of Tanzania at speeds up to 300 beats per minute. Spearheading the unstoppable juggernaut are DJ Duke and MCZo, representing the sound currently setting a furious pace in Dar es Salaam, emanating from hundreds of bedroom studios and animating the city’s dance-floors.
Singeli’s voracious absorption of influences includes vernacular styles such as taarab, vanga, mchiriku, sebene and segere, along with hip-hop and South African kwaito. DJ Duke is the founder of Pamoja Records, one of the key Singele studios. His productions with MCZo turned them into stars at home and their association with Kampala-based label Nyege Nyege Tapes is now bringing them international attention with appearances at Berlin’s famous Berghain and festivals in Finland and Greece.
