[B]Electric Amazonia traces the early history of the aparelhagem sound-system phenomenon in Belém, Brazil, through interviews with veteran selectors, entrepreneurs, and dancers. The film explores how alternative media helped cultivate a vibrant subculture of Caribbean dance music, culminating in the emergence of lambada during the 1970s. This overlooked history reveals an Amazonia that was cosmopolitan, resourceful, and electric.
Darien Lamen is a New York-born filmmaker and ethnomusicologist whose work explores labor, memory, and place. He has researched popular music in Belém since 2009. His documentaries include Clarissa Uprooted: Youth and Elders Uncover the Story of Black Rochester (2020) and Hoje Estamos Aqui (2022) , a precursor to Electric Amazonia.
