What are the ethical implications of documenting traditional, Indigenous cultures on film? How to mediate these encounters without being extractive or voyeuristic? In this panel, several filmmakers, whose films you will be able to watch at WOMEX, will discuss their work and how it relates to the documentation of culture.
Simona Constantin, Filmmaker (Romania) is a Bucharest-based documentary filmmaker, curator and researcher. For over a decade, she has focused on music as intangible cultural heritage, exploring the lives of traditional musicians and the generational transmission of their knowledge through film, cultural and educational projects.
Robert Bisha, Artist, Film Director, (Albania/Italy) is a pianist, composer, multi-instrumentalist and film director whose artistic practice bridges contemporary composition, folklore, ethnomusicology and improvisation. His work explores the intersection between traditional Mediterranean musical heritage and avant-garde electroacoustic soundscapes.
Lorenzo Mantovan, Director and Artist (Italy) is an Italian director and multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of film, music, and cultural research. His artistic practice explores how traditions can be reinterpreted through collaboration, using cinema as a space where sound, identity, and storytelling converge.
Arun Sivag, Founder of GlobalKulture (India) is a musician, social entrepreneur, social worker, and PhD scholar in Tribal Studies. Founder of GlobalKulture, he works with Indigenous communities to document and preserve vanishing musical traditions.
