Georgia: a multi-ethnic state, bordering east and west, hovering between the past and the future. Up on a hill, the warmth of the Paliashvili Music School shines out over Tbilisi. The plaster is crumbling, hardly any instrument can be tuned and many teachers are so old they could be the great-grandparents of their students. Yet those who step through the battered doors of the school after the strict entrance examination do so with pride because former students such as Lisa Batiashvili and Khatia Buniatishvili have gone on to conquer the world’s stages. The children dream of such success, their parents even more so.
Marita Stocker is a German filmmaker based in Leipzig. She studied German literature, journalism and electronic media. Since 2008, she is active as a writer and director mainly for documentaries.
