Duration 72’ | English with English subtitles
Founders of the Village Drums of Freedom, Gerry Drums and Nyron Roots, take us back to their early days in Trinidad & Tobago, during the island's recent independence. Inspired by elder leaders, they pursued spiritual and political empowerment through culture and took it to the international stage. 50 years later, they tell us their story as they prepare for the golden anniversary of their festival on that same piece of land they grew up on, showcasing the rich musical expressions that emerged from the culture of drumming.
Martina Lanfranchi lives in Napoli, Italy and runs Unity Club, a bar restaurant community arts and culture space. Berlin-native artist Jasmine Stein is invested in media-making and curating events, collaborations with musicians and exploration of collective effort. This is their first documentary film.
Jasmine Stein will be attending WOMEX 2024.
