German composer Hanns Eisler was the archetypal exile, running afoul of fascism, communism and capitalism, all in one lifetime! Hell’s Fury, The Hollywood Songbook is a staged, multi-media portrait: passionate songs of nostalgia, horror and longing, lyrics by Bertold Brecht. After Eisler fled Hitler, he wrote them in the 1940’s while writing film music in Hollywood. Expelled from America in the McCarthy era, he ended his days disillusioned in communist East Germany. His is the story of our time.
