The personification of the tireless spirit of music, Brazilian composer and multi-multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal began his career in 1950 at the age of 14. In the ensuing time he's made music enough for several lifetimes, creating over ten thousand compositions and picking up a plethora of awards and honorary doctorates on the way. He first gained wider attention in the late 60s in the influential roots-jazz group, Quarteto Nova, alongside percussionist Airto Moreira, leading to his 1970 collaboration with Miles Davis. Since the late 70s he has led his own Grupo, with many of the same personnel on board, through four decades of consistently innovative music making around the world. Asked to categorise his style of music, he once said: “It comes from the universe... I call it musica universal."
