The spiritual essence at the heart of Katarina Barruk's music is expressed through the Ume Sámi language spoken by her Swedish Sámi community located in the wide expanses above the Arctic Circle. Ume Sámi is on UNESCO’s Red List of endangered Indigenous languages, but in her compelling performances it comes to new life within a shape-shifting mix of symphonic synth-pop, anthemic grooves and shimmering guitars, creating a sonic tundra where she wanders and recounts stories, evoking the natural world through the ancient Sámi art of joiking. This year the director of Norway's Polarjazz festival cited Katarina Barruk as “the best act we have seen in many years here at Polarjazz”, while The Line of Best Fit music site opined that her performance at the 2023 Oya Festival in Oslo was “Oya's biggest revelation”.
