Maegandang expand the horizons of three venerable Korean traditional stringed instruments, introducing them into a universal landscape of shifting tonal possibilities within labyrinthine compositions journeying from elegiac reflection to breath-taking, fast-paced passages performed with tight-knit precision. The unique ensemble is comprised of three multidisciplinary artists, skilled performers on haegeum, gayageum and geomungo, sharing a vision of renovating Korean traditional music for a modern, interconnected age, while maintaining the connection to its deep and mysterious roots. Upon their debut in 2022, Maegandang swiftly picked up awards at several major Korean traditional music competitions, including the Grand Prix at the 21st Century Korean Music Project of that year, and delivered an acclaimed showcase at the Seoul Music Week. In the original Chinese characters, the ensemble's name translates as three words: charm, enjoyment, group. All that and much more.
