V. Young (Canada), Manitoba Chamber Orchestra

Heidi and Vicki present innovative and inspiring techniques for delivering music education to young people living in remote communities.

International Minifiddlers offers distance education in elementary teaching for violin pedagogues globally. Video lessons and real-time online instruction use a child-centred Colourstrings Method designed by Géla Szilvay for early childhood education. Heidi will discuss their experiences of the past four years.

For ten years, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra’s Fiddlers on the Loose programme has offered in-person workshops and concerts in remote centres. Professional musicians collaborate with regional fiddle instructors and offer tips on practicing and caring for instruments. Online materials augment the visits.

Both of these programs encourage the sharing of diverse backgrounds through music, and give young people insight into classical music and career options.
