2015 marked the 40th anniversary of the invasion and annexation of the Western Sahara territory and subsequent displacement of thousands of Saharawi nationals. A documentary to highlight the plight of refugees, Music of Exile of the Western Sahara focuses on the ongoing struggle for Saharawi musicians and the cause they continue to fight for.
The short film features powerful interviews with members of the El Wali Band, who have been at the forefront of the resistance movement since 1975. Female musicians Fatma Lkalia Sidi Wannat and Many Kouri Mbarek paint a vivid picture of life at that time: “We were doing a concert while the bomber planes were hovering in the skies over us and bombing us with Napalm, but that didn't scare us, nor make us back down, we would carry out our concerts, and spend the night there.” A full length documentary is in progress.
Katriona Homes, the director, will be present for an extended Q&A session after the screening.
