Nelida Karr sings and plays guitar, piano, cello and percussion. She writes songs suffused with the many influences she assimilated growing up in Malabo in Africa’s only Spanish-speaking country, Equatorial Guinea: the music of the Bubi ethnic group, religious songs, Equatoguinean rhythms like katya, kotto and bonko, the ubiquitous sounds of Nigerian and Congolese pop as well as jazz, blues and the Spanish and Latin records played at home by her father, the producer and singer, Samuel Karr.

An eclectic mix that she nevertheless incorporates into a sound all her own. She recorded the first of her three albums to date in 2010 at the age of 20. Earlier this year she won the first prize of the Spanish and Equatorial Guinean Vis a Vis festival, leading to a tour in Spain this summer.
