Afrobeat marches on around the world, and the spirit of Fela Kuti is alive and punching in Chile too. Since 2009 the Newen Afrobeat team have been setting down their Latin American response to the Kuti legacy to create a groove machine of impressive proportions that has sparked collaborations with the likes of Seun Kuti, Tony Allen, Oghene Kologbo and Cheik Tidiane Seck and steamrollered audiences at festivals and gigs through Chile, Brazil, Nigeria, the US and Europe.

The band’s name reflects the Afro-Chilean union: ‘Newen’ is from the language of the indigenous Chilean Mapuche community, meaning the individual life-force. Echoing Fela Kuti’s war-cry, ‘music is the weapon’, their lyrics carry social messages, inviting listeners to transcend the strictures of modern society and liberate themselves through a unified energy.
