With poise and grace the Pankisi Ensemble walk the fine line between ethnographic archivists following the canon of their native tradition and open-minded celebrants of a multifarious, living cultural heritage. Founded by musician, folk music researcher and teacher Bela Mutoshvili, with the aim of bringing to the world the varied vocal and instrumental styles of Chechnya and the Chechen communities of Georgia's Pankisi region, the ensemble has evolved over time and various configurations into a unique representation of the shared and distinct musical cultures of the Caucasus. Now a female quintet they recorded their first album, Music of Kists, Chechens of Georgia, in 2022 for German label Ored Recordings, and over the past two years have been enchanting audiences at festivals from Roskilde to WOMAD.
