ResiliArt

WOMEX in its digital edition is joining the ResiliArt movement launched by UNESCO in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. ResiliArt includes a series of debates with the participation of different creative professions. Its three main goals are:
• Raise awareness about the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the culture sector
• Provide a platform for artists and cultural professionals to ensure that their voices are heard
• Contribute to strategic decision-making and development of assistance mechanisms

A fair and sustainable digital World for Music

When the German Commission for UNESCO presented a session on “Fair Culture - How to make supply chains in the (digital) music industry fair and sustainable?” at WOMEX 2019 in Tampere, we were all very far from suspecting how even more acute these issues would become some months later!!

With the massive cancellation of live events, the remuneration of digital content has become for many creatives the only way of making a living and carry on their creative activities.

In the context of WOMEX, where music and music films from all regions of the planet are represented, we can see how gaps and inequalities are getting exacerbated and we are anxious about a growing gap between Global South and Global North, but also between mainstream music and independent productions. This represents a threat to the musical diversity, while the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions celebrates its 15th anniversary.

After an introduction by Keith Nurse, expert in Fair Culture, the debate will give the word to music professionals from different regions and active in different fields of the music industry to see which challenges they are facing and which solutions would be needed to insure a more fair and sustainable environment of the music in the digital world.
