Music built on the foundation of Maloya, forging a path between tradition and modernity, where the alternative rock of saturated strings blends seamlessly with percussive polyrhythms, and soaring voices transmitting in Creole and French their committed poetry addressing fundamental themes such as the thirst for justice, the struggle for freedom, the duty to remember and to pass on, and the imperative to keep seeking beauty in the darkness of the world.
Saodaj founders, Marie Lanfroy and Jonathan Itéma, have been internationally promoting Réunion Island's traditional sounds and rhythms of Maloya for nearly fifteen years, gathering over time a skilled team of fellow explorers from different musical backgrounds, adept players of traditional Réunionnais percussion, enhanced with intricate interplay between electric guitar and cello, at times like a chamber ensemble, at times with heavy intensity. Nomadic Maloya.
