Session 18
Chaired by Ken Smith (USA/Hong Kong, China), Asian performing arts critic, Financial Times
with S. Alice Mong (Taiwan/Hong Kong, China), executive director, Asia Society Hong Kong Center
Joyce Y Chiou (Taiwan), general and artistic director, National Taichung Theater
Ken Smith invites Alice Mong (Asia Society Hong Kong Center) and Joyce Chiou (National Taichung Theater) to share their experiences in identifying and cultivating their public. Mong and Chiou are pioneers in engaging potential audiences beyond performances, talks, or purely educational projects, in large part due to their experience in exploiting current trends in architectural design that offer a wealth of non-traditional settings. Hearing how these two directors have learned literally to think outside the box, utilizing every bit of available space in their venues, should be inspirational for anyone attending this session. Devised as a primer on the state of musical performance in Asia, from traditional to avant-garde, the session will also allow attendees to present their own situations in an open discussion.
