The lockdown and cancellation of concerts incited Classical:NEXT 2019 Showcase Artist Tricia Dawn Williams to find alternative ways of performing, whilst respecting social distancing.
In a specially thought out programme, OUT OF THE CAGE explores works written for piano, toy piano and backtrack, with works by American composer John Cage and Maltese composer Ruben Zahra. In this programme I explore works written for piano, toy piano and backtrack featuring works by American composer John Cage and Maltese composer Ruben Zahra. The lockdown and cancellation of concerts incited me to find alternative ways of performing whilst respecting social distancing:
"This carefully thought out programme is inspired by my range of emotions during this period. Boredom, sadness, irony, panic … as the weeks rolled into months. Stuck in A Room all by myself, contemplating when will I go on stage again and perform to a live audience. Are these virtual concerts going to become the new norm for the next few years? The toy piano reminds me of my childhood … my tiny blue toy piano from which I was inseparable. I remember Taqbil - traditional Maltese nursery rhymes and games from my childhood, my carefree days, playing with my friends in the streets of the city I grew in. Do children still sing and play these games today? The Suite for Toy Piano which is humorous and somewhat ironic transports me to Malta’s old capital, the silent city of Mdina where I used to enjoy long Sunday afternoon walks for some moments of reflection.
I panic … what’s happening to the world? Can we beat this virus? Am I confined in this virtual world till I die … when The Worms Crawl In? No … I will not give up … I will Dream of a better world. I need music … I need to feel alive and I need to perform.
In Malta, the situation is quite stable. We’re still very careful but slowly things seem to be getting back on track. Alleluia!!!"
