Festivals, just as concert halls and orchestras, are striving for longevity and keeping classical music alive, looking for a new, younger audience. When trying to involve them, innovation seems key. If a young audience is a different audience, what should we be doing differently? And who might know better than the NEXT:generation of musicians and concert programmers?

If festivals are ‘an essential vehicle for the innovation and affirmation of daring artistic practices’, can we safely say our festivals are daring enough? Should we be more innovative when it comes to content, or form, or both? If we want to interest a younger audience, who can lead the way? Can young musicians bridge the gap?

This session was devised with Quinten Peelen.
