While we are very excited to be in Porto with a lot of you at the end of October, the Pandemic still holds the reins in regards to travel and mobility. Therefore, to ensure that the incredible programme in which the WOMEX 21 Jury selected this year is given the exposure it deserves, we share three virtual Showcases to enjoy in the comfort of your sofas.
Premiering for WOMEX 21 Digital Showcases:
Rangamatir Baul (India)
Rina Das Baul is one of the most honoured female Baul singers from India. The Bauls are mystic minstrels living in West Bengal, and also in rural Bangladesh. Their performance reflects their long heritage of preaching mysticism through songs.
Including an interview by Jo Frost (UK)
Chalanes del Amor (Chile/Mexico)
Formed in Mexico in 2007, Chalanes Del Amor’s show is a musical voyage through the Latin American popular repertoire, enjoying rhythms such as jarocho, montuno, vallenato, cumbia, chilena, huayno and more. This duet captivates the audience with their skill playing jarana, requinto, marimbula, tres cubano, accordion; and tap dancing.
Al Bilali Soudan (Mali)
Al Bilali Soudan, a close-knit Tuareg family ensemble from Timbuktu, Mali, perform takamba music, also known as tashigalt. Their instruments are the traditional tehardent-s (ngoni lute) - reinforced with an electric buzz and grit - and calabash percussion; and their musical repertoire is an evolving contemporary adaptation and improvisation of traditional themes, always faithful to the path of musical greats of the Sahara.
