The Opening Ceremony does not simply signal the beginning of the global music meeting, but sets the tone for all it has to offer, bringing to the stage the spirit of the event and underlining its intercontinental and innovative perspective. The Opening Ceremony will be presented by Black Lives in Music in collaboration with British Underground, Arts Council England and last but not least the Hannover (Germany) based Asambura Ensemble.
NEXT:matters! is a gala performance showcasing diversity and excellence in classical music, as it should be in the 21st century featuring a variety of internationally acclaimed artists. Through this performance we will champion discussion on racial diversity within the genre, engage a wider audience and challenge the direction of Classical Music in the century to come.
2022 Performers
Two new commissions by internationally acclaimed artists, Jason Yarde and Ayanna Witter-Johnson will be presented. Both British artists are accomplished writers and performers. These works focus on classical music in the context of an immersive experience, full of wider cultural references and new perspectives to the artform. This is a rich mix of traditional classical elements with contemporary grooves, gilded with electronic sound. Performing the music will be a stellar line up of musicians including Jason himself and the celebrated violinist Laura Ayoub of the Ayoub Sisters duo.
The intercultural avant-garde ensemble Asambura and their rich sounds will feature in their own set representing the local emerging musical scene. Keynote speeches will set the tone for a memorable event. This promises to be an exciting musical cornucopia - NEXT:matters!
Opening Keynote: This is where the heart is!
If diversity refers to the heart of society, what would the world of music, opera and theatre look like if it were to do justice to this vision? Insanely good - hot, tender, loud, glisteningly bright and deeply dark is what Marc Sinan is suggesting when he describes his utopia.
Marc Sinan is a composer and guitarist. In his work, he explores new ways of collaborating between artists in a transcultural and transmedial context. He works mostly as a composer, artistic director, guitarist and producer with his own ensemble, the Marc Sinan Company, as well as with changing international guests and institutional partners: from music festivals and opera houses in Germany to numerous collaborations with orchestras, ensembles, musicians and artists from Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. Recordings of his works are released on ECM Records.
