Troparium de Catania
Songs and feasts in Norman Sicily
Al Qantarah Troparium de Catania evokes the sounds of a multiethnic medieval Sicily through vocal and instrumental music, which consist of sacred, lay, art and secular pieces. The "written" musical tradition is juxtaposed to the oral tradition of Sicilian songs. Medieval instruments of the Sicilian, Arabic and Persian traditions are used, in perfect harmony with the multiethnic reconstruction of the repertoire.
News: Have toured internationally in USA, Tasmania, Estonia, Lituania and all over Europe.
Press: "... the song is central to the repertory of Al Qantarah who performed at the Washington Square Church in a sold-out World Music Institute concert ... The music glimpsed an old world that was anything but provincial." (Jon Pareles, The New York Times)"The music spoke for itself. Nothing sounded musty or resuscitated, even the dance of death was catchy" (Heidi Waleson, The Wall Street Journal)"The audience in the Spanish Hall raised its enthusiasm and quietened itself only after several fervent encores. A concert that has no equal" (Jutta Hoepfel, Tiroler Tageszeitung)
