The Handover invite you on a labyrinthine, immersive journey across shape-shifting, trance-inducing musical landscapes invoked by the ritual rhythms of the Egyptian countryside and the delicate complexities of classical Arabic maqams, melding into the raw expressiveness and celebratory energy of shaabi wedding music, peppered with a good dose of psychedelic improvisation, kraut-rock riffs and ecstatic passages redolent of the spiritually searching sounds of 60s avant-garde jazz. This widescreen musical experience is generated by three musicians: oud player Aly Eissa and violinist Ayman Asfour from Egypt and Norwegian-Belgian synthesiser/organ player Jonas Cambien. A performance by The Handover is typically one stretch without break: a long build-up that lasts for the duration of the concert, from meditative drones to an exuberant, joyful climax of inspired improvisations borne aloft by the irresistible momentum of deep Egyptian dance rhythms.
