It was ironic that Niraj was awarded 'Best underground act' at the Asian Music Awards in November 2006, given his many years experience of performing and composing and the millions who have heard his music testimony to his always-fresh sound. As an artist, Niraj developed his skills while working with Mark Hill (Artful Dodger/Craig David), but first made a name for himself with his work on the Outcaste label, where he was spotted by Nitin Sawhney. His ability to mix modern production with western and eastern classical styles was displayed on the critically acclaimed album New Breeds. Following this Niraj had two top ten hits in Asia with his group Dum Dum Project and co-wrote and produced for pop group Liberty X. As well as his stand-alone work, Niraj has built a reputation as a unique soundtrack composer. He created his first musical (Baiju Bawra) aged 25. His work since then has included Mahabharat (BBC Radio 4) and the Bafta nominated Power of Art series (BBC2), where he created a baroque score, putting a twist on Vivaldi's work. Niraj has produced a wide variety of original work, for several dance productions such as 'Awaz' (Akademi) and for TV and radio such as HBO's 'Sex and the City'. With his 2006 album Along the Dusty Road Niraj earned plaudits for his unique take on Asian classical and folk styles. The album resulted in major airplay and two BBC-supported live sessions a recording at Maida Vale and an atmospheric live set at Roundhouse as part of the Electric Proms. In addition itunes selected a track from the album as one of their downloads of the week in June 06. The name of the track? The Nomad how apt. Whether dance, classical, collaboration or a whole new direction, Niraj's next move will be followed on his personal website www.nirajchag.com
