Petra Poutanen is a singer, composer, kantele and guzheng virtuoso and choir conductor. In her spellbinding live performances, the choir she conducts is herself, weaving shifting skeins of melody into an angelic host augmented in turn by a wizened shaman, evoked by the granular resonance of her throat-singing. Upon her large-scale sonic canvases, she lyrically explores her interest in the personal experience of the sacred, drawing on folk-tales, old hymns and biblical texts to question perceptions of sexuality, gender and power through history. The visceral nature of her inquiries is hinted at in the title of her 2022 debut album, Pyhä Veri Vuotaa (Sacred Blood Will Spill), which was greeted with nominations for both a Teosto Award and an Etno Emma Award, while Songlines magazine glowingly hailed it as “enticing, haunting, mesmerizing, spiritual, and hypnotic”.
