Since its creation by a handful of determined individuals in 2003, the Festival has come a long way -- and we’ve worked hard to get the word out about Segou and the cultural treasures of Mali.
The Festival Sur le Niger was born of an initiative long dreamed of by the civic and cultural leaders of Segou. Their intent was to create a unique event that highlights the attractions and potential of the city and the region; a festival that both supports the local economy and spotlights the unique arts and culture of Mali.
Since its inception in 2005, the Festival on the Niger has rapidly become a major cultural event of unprecedented scale in Mali. Held in early February in the city of Segou, the Festival Sur le Niger is a true multidisciplinary event, offering a program of music, dance, theater, art exhibitions, discussion forums, conferences and more. It’s a festival where contemporary culture exists alongside ancient tradition and international music stars play alongside fresh young talent.
