Inspired by the mandingo melodies inherited from my griot ancestors, I weave and braid together jazz tunes and chords with oriental melodies, nordic folk music and improvisations. My kora is a soft and mystic companion, my voice for harmony and respect.’’

Lamine Cissokho is from the Casamance region, in southern Senegal, and comes from a family of mandinka griots, whose traditions date back to the 14th century.

The kora is passed from father to son, so are its melodies and apprenticeship. He spent his childhood and teenage years crafting the instrument and learning how to master it, on and on again, under the supervision of his father, Sana Cissokho, a famous griot from Ziguinchor, and of his great-uncle, Lalo Keba Drame.

Living in Sweden since 2001, Lamine is a well-known part of the swedish world music scene, and has performed in concerts and festivals in over fifteen foreign countries.

To name a few:

FRANCE: Convivencia, Internationales de la Guitare Montpellier, Le Jam Montpellier, Africajarc, Festival de Guitare de Biot Bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris, etc.

SWEDEN: Urkult, Linköping Folk Festival, Fasching, Elverket, etc.

SENEGAL: Festival des rythmes et formes du monde, Just4you, Institut francais de Dakar, etc.

AUSTRIA: Jazzit, Tunnel, Kasumama

SPAIN: Poporina Folk Festival

SCOTLAND: Ha Orchestra Project, International Harp Festival

NORWAY: Global Nights Oslo

DENMARK: Copenhagen Jazz Festival, International Guitar Festival (Copenhague & Aarhus)

FINLAND: Vasa Festival

GERMANY: Lagerhaus Kulturcentrum, Tübingen Festival

ENGLAND: Sage of Gate, London

It´s while playing solo on stage, but even while accompanied by other musicians, that Lamine´s musical compositions find their full expression.

Rhythm and groove, already highlighted by Lamine´s kora playing, are accentuated by instruments such as the double bass, bass, guitar and/or percussions (calabash, djembe), you name it.

Here are some of the musicians who have worked alongside Lamine:

Ballake Sissokho, duo at the International Guitar Festival in Aarrhus,

Alain Oyono ( saxophonist for Youssou N’dour) who collaborated with Lamine in his latest album, SUNUJAZZ,

Mamadou Dembele, multi instrument player with the Kanazoe Orchestra,

Ale Möller, a well-known artist in the swedish world scene,

Eric Bibb, who will begin collaborating with Lamine in August 2019 during the Festival de Jazz in Marciac,

Manish Pingle, indian ragga master

Two new albums will be released in 2019:

SUNUJAZZ and NEW CONTINENT (duo with Manish Pingle).

PAKAO, Lamine’s first album was released in 2011, followed by SAMA TILO in 2015, a single, SENEGAL POUR LA VIE, in 2016, and KORA+1 in 2017.

Lamine continues his musical journey with serenity, lifted by exchanges, by creation, and by the desire to expand his musical exploration with his kora, increasingly attracted to dialogues with world musics and jazz.
