Sofia Adriana Portugal, Susana Quaresma and Tânia Cardoso share a taste for vocal, sound and scenic research. These are the three women who shape songs and ancient knowledge in a contemporary way, through polyphonic singing and percussion rhythms, in MARIA MONDA (Mary Weeding).
They sing Lusophone or Iberian repertoire, but also original compositions that emphasize the power of words and poetry, as we can hear on the debut and homonymous title, MARIA MONDA, presented to the public last February 14th at the National Theater of St. Charles, within the scope of the Festival Antena 2, the public radio that gives support to the album, together with the GDA Foundation, in a Sons Vadios edition.
MARIA MONDA was born in April 2015, when she participated in the Festival Cantar Abril, in Almada. This participation resulted in the prize for Best Recreation of Resistance Songs, with the theme “Já o Tempo se Habitua”, by José Afonso. From then on, the possibility of collaboration with the musicians / composers Amélia Muge, José Manuel David (Gaiteiros de Lisboa, Quatro ao Sul) and Rodrigo Crespo (Canto Ondo) emerged, who promptly made available themes of his own to be sung by the voices of Maria Monda and that are part of the repertoire of her first album, now released.
In Portuguese, “Mondar” means to clean and remove the superfluous and for MARIA MONDA the essential thing is the weave of voices, sometimes in soft silks, sometimes in rough blankets, singing in homage to Terra-Mãe, named Maria.
