Born in Japan, Soona Park is a Korean Gayageum player and composer. She first encountered Gayageum at the age of 10 at the Korean diaspora elementary school in Japan. In her late teens, Soona ventured into North Korea in order to study Gayageum there. In North Korea, she discovered the North Korean Gayageum and learned to play it from masters who worked on improvement and modification of traditional Korean instruments in the 1960s and 1970s. Her journey into music did not stop there. Soona moved to South Korea in 2005 and enrolled in the Korea National University of Arts, a renowned conservatory in South Korea, and studied the traditional (classic version) Gayageum.

Soona plays Gayageum with such versatility and skills by employing wide range of complex tones and rhythms. Particularly, she uses all strings from low-pitched strings to high-pitched strings to perform intricate music. Further, as reverberation is a very important element in Korean traditional music, Soona intentionally and disruptively creates breaks and pauses to highlight the reverberation. Through this process, audience could focus on her Gayageum sound with more intensity. Her skills and ability to play Gayageum is not limited to traditional music. Soona has an extensive experience of collaboration with various genres of performing arts and music.
