In 1966 Prime Minister Obote fell on the traditional monarchies of Uganda. The Ganda, Nyoro and Ankole peoples lost their Kabaka, Omukama and Omugabe, the palaces were seized and burned, the retainers - including the musicians - killed or dispersed, the royal instruments, some of them over 400 years old, destroyed. So what became of the royal musics? One factor that at least ensures that they have not completely disappeared is the good fortune that Hugh Tracey made two recording trips to Uganda in 1950 and 1952, where with the rulers' encouragement he recorded the music on this album, and much else besides. Much of this beautiful music is impossible to reproduce now and will never be heard again. Great classical African music.
