I'm an award-winning songwriter and musician from Wales and have been performing under the stage name 'The Gentle Good' for over a decade. As a multi-instrumentalist and acoustic specialist I'm best known for my intricate guitar playing and acoustic arrangements. I'm heavily influenced by Welsh folk music and write primarily in the Welsh language. I'm an established artist in Wales, having won the Welsh Language Album of the Year Award in 2014 (for Y Bardd Anfarwol) and the Welsh Music Prize in 2017 (for Ruins/Adfeilion).
International collaboration is a strong feature of my work and in recent years I have been writing and recording material with musicians from the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, North East India. Welsh missionaries were active in the region from 1841 to 1969 and had a profound influence on Khasi society, the effects of which are still being felt today. The Khasi-Cymru Collective uses music to explore the the complex links between Welsh and Khasi people and seeks to examine the effects of mission and colonialism on both cultures. A n album of recorded material by the Khasi-Cymru Collective is due out in the spring of 2021.
Womex 2020 will be my fourth time at the festival and I am particularly interested in joining conversations about reforming the music industry and supporting indigenous cultures in music. I am also keen to speak to artists and event organisers about writing music, touring and performing in a world affected by Covid-19.
