A subtle and inspired crossing between gnawa tradition and more actual sounds. Powerful !
Founded in 2009, Global Gnawa is the reunion of Jaouad El Garouge, Thierry Fournel and Mehdi Chaïb, 3 talented musicians (and accomplices) deeply at the service of authentic music, rich in improvisations and open to other musical encounters. With a strong sense of improvisation, Global Gnawa weaves new links between the music of Gnawa rituals, jazz and the particular influences of each musicians. Global Gnawa develops arrangements and compositions exploring ancestral Gnawa rhythms and songs, (traditionally brought from West Africa to the Maghreb) in all their spiritual and harmonic dimensions. The haunting voice of Jaouad El Garouge find an echo in the choir of musicians and invite the public to communion. Global Gnawa’s musical research is anchored in the encounter of this heritage with jazzy flights carried by the free-jazz energy of Mehdi Chaïb’s saxophone, but also by influences of Afrobeat, reggae, or ethio- jazz. On the strings, the musician-researcher Thierry Fournel offers a very subtle game animated by groovy electric guitar solos.
Jaouad El Garouge’s guembri (3-string bass) guides and brings together all traditional and more modern instruments in a dialogue that inexorably draws the audience into trance, dance and transcendence!
Global Gnawa has just been joined by the excellent percussionist Adhil Mirghani to form an explosive quartet and offers a new show.
