For those of you who have enjoyed Rim Banna's The Mirrors of My Soul, we now offer you her latest effort, a collaboration with Danish artist Henrik Koitzsch entitled This Was Not My Story. This lovely, aching, angry album is 9 tracks of pure emotion regarding the occupation of Palestine and the ongoing wars of liberation, uprising and conquest between Palestine and Israel...yet it seems as if no one and nothing is spared the outrage and sorrow of the words of these songs. Rim and Henrik dedicated this album "to the Palestinian and Lebanese people and their struggle against evil force of the aggression occupation," but this could refer as easily to American military force and the so-called "Coalition of the Willing" as it could to Israel's military, and one suspects that Hamas and Hezbollah and their uncompromising uses of violence and religious fervour are not spared the artists' anger. Six of the songs' lyrics were composed by Rim Banna's mother, Zuhaira Sabbagh, including the title track, "Wait for Me," "When" and "Defend the Freedom" (which includes a sample of President Bush in one of his many speeches defended U.S. policy toward the Middle East), while Rim and Henrik composed all of the music, except "Anat My Mother" and the instrumental "The Wall," in collaboration. Rim's husband, Leonid Alexeienko, who co-produced Al-Quds Everlasting, adds guitar to "Fly Love," while Henrik plays the majority of the guitar tracks here (and fine playing it is, too!).
