DEDICATION-In terms of musical diversity, Turkey is one of the richest countries on earth. In every region of the country one finds different music traditions, and most of these traditions have been a part of Turkey’s modernization over the past century. In this way musical activities in the country as a whole have continued, both as a part of traditional culture and as a component of modern urban culture.

Since the beginning of the 1900s, this multiple and diverse structure has been reaching a broad public through a variety of recording methods. In this way, a popular music industry has grown up both in Turkey itself an in its neighboring countries. One of the truly colorful personalities of this music market for nearly fifty years, earning himself a dear place in the hearts of the public with both his music and his personality, is clarinetist Mustafa Kandirali.

The lively and magical sounds of Kandirali’s clarinet on morning holiday programs in the 1970s and 80s truly did enfold those mornings in a holiday atmosphere. Uniting his masterful performance with his superior skills, he had Turkey belly dancing for forty years.

Though the first thing that comes to mind at the mention of Mustafa Kandirali is his repertoire of ciftetelli and Roman havasis, he is also a fasil musician and an accompanist. Kandirali’s repertoire is expansive and included examples of many different genres, ranging from saz semaisis through ciftetellis, zeybeks and Rom melodies.

When we look at his life, his artistic practice and his works, we realize that it would take an entire book to cover the whole body of his work. In this project, we wanted to present a selection of Mustafa Kandirali’s most outstanding performances to those who have loved and missed him for the many years he has not been performing. In addition, we strove to back up the work with a short story of his personal and professional life. Excluding the many promotional pieces written about him, this work constitutes the first comprehensive examination and analysis of Kandirali’s life and art. Compiled of recordings selected from four albums 1970s and 80s in the Uzelli archives, this album is the first in a continuing series. Following this we will continue with albums of the top names in Rom musical performance under the Uzelli label.
