Malmö-based ensemble BITOI – acronym for Bass Is The Original Instrument - operates at the crossroads of ritual, improvisation and electro-acoustic experimentation, innovatively re-framing ancient folk traditions through a contemporary Nordic lens, transforming evocative vocal techniques - bird whistles, wind imitations, vocal cord drumming - into immersive soundscapes led by Cassius Lambert’s custom-modified electric bass, which often seems to disguise itself as a zither, an oud, or something else entirely. Vocalists Alexandra Shabo, Anja Tietze Lahrmann and Lise Kroner infuse these shape-shifting textures with choral depth and folkloric intimacy, inviting listeners to a contemplative yet visceral experience, akin to sacred ceremony. Since 2024 their unique sonic invocations have been resonating with audiences across diverse stages in Europe - including Roskilde, Clandestino, Rewire and Sinsal festivals - and in Japan, collaborating with Okinawan artist Mutsumi Aragaki.
