Galician musician Xabier Díaz have just released the new single “Illas de Sal”, from his album “As Catedrais Silenciadas” (Músicas de Salitre, 2020). This composition is based on a traditional piece recovered by the renowned american ethnomousiciologist Alan Lomax 68 years ago in a little village situated in the Galician coast.

“Illas de Sal” is a song about Galician coastline, the music video also shows the wild spirit of the Galician beaches and sea. It also features a little girl performing traditional Galician dance in the shore, near the same place where the original composition was recorded. “It seems like a little girl playing in the shore but, in reality, she is dancing with the sea”, explained Xabier Díaz.

Alan Lomax is, in opinion of most of the experts, one of the greatest ethnomusicologists in the 20th century. Back in the days, 68 years ago, in the Costa da Morte (Galicia Northwest coast), he recorded some women singing a song. Nowadays, this piece served as an inspiration to Diaz, who created a brand new song, with a chorus that didn’t exist in the original. The lyrics are also created by Xabier Díaz, except for some phrases that come from traditional compositions.
