Son of a well-respected Psychologist and of a Biology Teacher, who is a renowned Singer as well, Michael Benjamin (Mika) was born in Haïti, in 1981 where he and his two siblings were raised by nurturing parents and grew up in a very musical environment.

His father, Lionel Benjamin, who has sung at the “EXPO 67” (Haïtian Pavilion), has been his greatest musical influence and mentor. For, LB was recognised to be, at the end of the 70’s, the most gifted author/composer/performer of his generation.

Early on, the youngest of the Benjamin family was introduced to musical instruments (piano, guitar) and caught the musical bug. As a result, a song he wrote about Christmas at age eighteen (18), became the public’s favorite, making him a finalist in a Television (Télémax) Christmas Contest called “Konkou Chante Nwèl”

As he moved to Canada to continue his studies Michael fully engaged himself in his music. His first album, “Vwayaj” (“Travels”) which also introduced his sister, Melodie, as a backup singer was produced by his older brother and Manager Lionel Benjamin Jr. It came out in 2000 and was well received by the Haitian public. In fact, his hit song “Ou Pati” (“You Left Me”) won him many fans, young and old alike.

Two years later, that song, re-arranged in “troubadour style” by the famous duo of Mizik Mizik, Fabrice Rouzier and Kéké Belizaire, became an international hit. A true specimen of the “Haïti Twoubadour” genre and latest créole musical movement (advocating the return to the basics, simplicity, freshness and naturalness) “Ou Pati” has allowed Michael to launch an international career, to perform and better his craft around the world (Europe, Africa, North America, Caribbean).

However, Michael chose not to settle in the “twoubadour” style that brought him fame. True to his passion and his musical roots, he more and more performed alongside successful “konpa” bands (Carimi, T-Vice, Konpa Kreyòl) and truly benefited from these on-stage experiences.
His second album, “MIKA”, is a reflection of their talents and collaborative efforts.

According to the artist himself, this new album goes even well beyond his dreams and expectations. Filled with island sun and energy, fun-loving rhythms and attractive refrains, this CD offers sixteen (16) heart-warming and enticing musical tracks. Recorded in studios in both Miami and Montréal, with the assistance of gifted producer, Andy Barrow, this album is charming and disarming just like his namesake.

French, Créole and English lyrics and chorus are naturally intertwined and make for a fabulous journey among musical styles (konpa, soul, raga, pop). In ONE word, “MIKA” is CATCHY, and it allows Michael and his “posse” (MYC) to bring listeners within its “home based” relax world of groovy songs and smiles. However, this fun-loving artist does not shy away from harsh social realities. He also sings of injustices, of violence and candidly depicts many of the daily dramas of Third World Countries.

“ Hit after hit, this innately gifted Haïtian pop music artist is at the doors of tremendous popular success. [In this album] I personally see the first sketch of a star [Michael] who epitomizes the essence of the Créole character and soul.” Alain Brunet, La Presse, Montreal

“ the pop patois crossover joint Paul Simon would have love to make.” Jason Richards, Now Magazine, Toronto
