The Walking Jazz project began in Manizales in 1989 under the direction of bassist Luis Guillermo Morales Quiceno, in order to bring together a group of national and foreign musicians who were carrying out works around this musical genre. Due to the success obtained in the first concerts, Walking Jazz continued its activities by projecting itself nationwide with the purpose of interpreting the different styles that have stood out throughout the history of Jazz. For this purpose, there were musicians of important international trajectory such as the Cubans Jorge Najarro and Alfredo de la Fe, the Venezuelan Joel Márquez, the Colombian teacher Álvaro Rojas, the percussionist Diego Galé, the saxophonist Hernán Darío Gutiérrez, with whose contributions he notably nurtured the project.

Almost twenty years after its creation and thanks to the support of the University of Caldas and the National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Venezuela (Fesnojiv), a space of academic dynamics was created through Walking Jazz with the participation of Venezuelan guests who conducted clinics for students and teachers. Each workshop concluded with a concert by the Big band Walking Jazz in which the following guests participated:

May 2007, Valdemar Rodriguez (Clarinet) Giancarlo Castro (Director). May 2009, Andrés Briceño (Drums) Linda Briceño (Trumpet).
October 2009, David Ascanio (Piano) Carina Ochoa (Soprano).
June 2010, Gonzalo Teppa (Double Bass).

As of 2011, Walking Jazz has dedicated its work to highlighting the contributions of Latin music to jazz through internationally renowned figures, who have also conducted clinics for students, teachers and the general public in the city of Manizales:

June 2011 Diego Galé (Latin Percussion - Colombia).
June 2012 Giovanni Hidalgo (Latin Percussion - Puerto Rico).

Since 2013, the link between the University of Caldas and the University of the Arts ISA of Cuba has allowed, through a cooperation agreement, the participation of prominent Cuban musicians and researchers to the project, giving rise in September 2015 to the I Cuban Percussion and Piano Seminar, in which the teachers participated: Lino Arturo Neira Betancourt, Nisleidys Flores Carmona, Román Justo Pelladito Hernández, Agustín Gómez Lavín and Yulia Rodríguez Kúrkina.

June 2016 Arturo O´Farrill (First Composition and Arrangement Seminar for Big Band) With the support of Afro Latin Jazz Alliance.

September 2016, II Cuban Percussion and Piano Seminar, Guests: Dr. Lino Arturo Neira B, Lic Nisleidys Flores C, Juan Carlos Rojas (Peje), Tomás Ramos Ortiz (Panga), Rodolfo Argudín Jústiz (Peruchín).
