Since the first edition of Ziro Festival of Music in 2012, the festival has celebrated the best in the independent music scene, both within India and internationally. Over 6000 attendees reach the remote valley every year to experience the unique festival and hear over 40 bands perform over four days. The genres of music include folk, rock, jazz and classical. Some of the artists that have played at Ziro Festival include Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Mono (Japan), Shye Ben-Tzur and the Rajasthan Express (Israel/India), Damo Suzuki (CAN, Germany), Madou Siddiqui (Mali), Nubya Garcia (UK), Acid Mothers Temple (Japan) and many more.
The eco-conscious festival is hosted by the ancient tribe called the Apatanis, who call Ziro valley home. Everything including the festival stages and all other infrastructure is made of locally sourced bamboo. Several cultural exchange programmes and learning workshops/residencies have been set up for both artists and the local community to learn from each other.
The festival also a partnership with India's national TV channel Doordarshan because of which the festival has an outreach of about 10 million who tune in to watch every year.
